Through a loophole in the Baker Act, mental facilities are holding patients for longer than 72 hours.

According to our poll, 61% of our respondents did not feel their rights were clearly explained to them. On top of that, only 23% were ever given a court hearing regarding their stay.

Their stories include mentions of inhumane living conditions, poor quality food, and cruel staff. Length of stay range from two days to one year during one Baker Act internment.

This type of story is common both in our survey and online.

The source of this misuse is vague wording in the third criteria of the Baker Act. Through this project, we intend to raise awareness and force action on preventing this abuse from any on any further.
